Markets Overview:

The UK 100 is called to open +17 points at 10,134.
The UK 100 is seen opening slightly higher, with futures up around 0.13%, this follows the UK’s bluchip index finishing marginally lower yesterday, ending down 0.03%, while the FTSE 250 fell 0.47%, as investors digested mixed corporate updates and U.S. inflation data.

U.S. equities fell on Tuesday, led lower by financials as bank earnings and policy concerns weighed on sentiment.  The Dow fell 0.7%, while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq both declined around 0.4%. Financial stocks were the main drag after JPMorgan fell about 4% despite beating profit expectations, as management warned that a proposed cap on credit card interest rates would harm consumers and the economy. Visa and Mastercard also declined, pulling the broader banking sector lower.  Delta Air Lines shares fell after its 2026 profit outlook disappointed. More broadly, the pullback was seen as a modest correction after recent record highs, rather than a shift in underlying risk appetite.  U.S. inflation data showed headline and core CPI rising 0.3% month-on-month and 2.6% year-on-year, broadly in line with expectations and reinforcing the view that the Federal Reserve will hold rates steady in January.

Asian markets were led higher by Japan, where equities surged to fresh record highs. The Nikkei rose around 1.6% to above 54,500 and the Topix also reached a new peak, driven by speculation that Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi may call a snap election as early as February. Markets interpret this as increasing the likelihood of further fiscal stimulus.  The weaker yen supported export-heavy Japanese stocks, although concerns remain about the implications for Japan’s fiscal position and bond market stability.  Chinese equities reversed earlier gains and finished slightly lower after authorities raised the minimum margin requirement for buying shares on credit to 100%, increasing the cost of leverage and dampening speculative demand. This offset otherwise supportive data showing a record 2025 trade surplus and stronger imports.  Hong Kong shares edged higher, supported by technology stocks and continued interest in Chinese AI-related listings. South Korean shares extended their recent run, while Australian and Singaporean markets were flat and Indian equities edged lower amid concerns about potential U.S. trade tariffs.
