The UK 100 is called to open +38 points at 9,730. The UK 100 has been called lower on Tuesday, after weaker jobs market figures, including a rise in the unemployment rate and slower wage growth. Unemployment rose to 5.1% in the three months to October, from 5.0%, while average pay growth fell to 4.7% from 4.8%. London’s blue-chip index was called 291points lower, chipping off some of the gains from the previous day, when the benchmark added over 102 points to close at 9,751.31.
The S&P ended Monday slightly lower as key stocks in the artificial intelligence trade came under pressure. The broad market index lost 0.16% to settle at 6,816.51 after beginning the session in positive territory. The Dow Jones slipped 41.49 points, or 0.09%, to finish at 48,416.56, while the Nasdaq fell 0.59% to 23,057.41.
Rolls-Royce today announced it plans to buy back another £200 million of its shares. The additional repurchases follow last month’s completion of this year’s £1 billion programme, part of £1.9 billion returned to shareholders in 2025. The group’s shares have risen by another 90% this year but have drifted from 1196p at the end of September to close last night at 1114p. The interim buyback is due to commence on 2 January and run until annual results on 24 February, when the company will announce its buyback plans for 2026.
