The S&P fell 1.07% to end the day at 6,827.41, and the Nasdaq declined 1.69% to 23,195.17. The Dow Jones finished down 245.96 points, or 0.51%, to settle at 48,458.05 after scoring a new intraday all-time high earlier in the session. The broad market index and tech-heavy Nasdaq were bogged down by a more than 11% drop in Broadcom, which some analysts think is because of margin compression worries. That’s even after the company beat fourth-quarter expectations and gave a strong forecast for the current quarter, saying artificial intelligence chip sales look to double.
Asia markets were under pressure, with the Nikkei 225 and Hang Seng index down by about 1.3%. The traditional safe haven asset of gold continues to trade in record territory, up 1% at $4343 an ounce.
Cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin will be regulated in a similar way to other finance products under new UK laws coming into force in 2027. The Treasury announced legislation which will mean crypto firms have to meet a set of standards and rules overseen by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA). It follows efforts to overhaul the market which has grown in popularity in recent years as an alternative investment product and a way of making payments.
