Company News:

AstraZeneca beat third-quarter earnings expectations on Thursday, helped by strong sales of its cancer, heart and kidney disease drugs, prompting London’s most valuable listed company to retain its full-year forecasts.  AstraZeneca is making big strides to achieve its goal of $80 billion in annual revenues by 2030 and is betting on its expansion plans and drug pricing deal in the U.S., its biggest market, to provide some relief from import tariffs.

BT raised its interim dividend to 2.45 pence a share and said it was on track to increase free cash flow to 2 billion pounds by March 2027.  The company reported a 3% drop in revenue to 4.93 billion pounds ($6.62 billion) and flat adjusted core earnings of 2.08 billion pounds for the second quarter, broadly in line with market expectations, on Thursday.

Diageo today scaled back guidance amid weakness in the Chinese white spirits market and a softer US consumer environment.  The Guinness and Smirnoff maker now expects net sales for the year to June to be flat or slightly down and operating profit growth to be low to mid-single digit.  The company’s previous guidance had been for an unchanged sales performance and mid-single digit profit growth.  Net sales were flat in the quarter to the end of September, despite growth in Europe, Latin America and Africa. Interim boss Nik Jhangiani said: “We are not satisfied with our current performance and are focused on what we can manage and control; acting with speed to drive efficiencies, prioritising investment and adapting more quickly to an evolving consumer environment.”

National Grid reported first-half adjusted profit slightly ahead of market expectations on Thursday, helped by higher UK electricity transmission revenue and increased investment across its regulated businesses.  The company has been reshaping its portfolio under long-time Chief Executive John Pettigrew to focus on regulated electricity and gas networks by selling its U.S. onshore renewables arm and agreeing to divest the Grain LNG terminal.

Sainsbury’s second biggest supermarket group, on Thursday followed industry leader Tesco in raising its full-year profit outlook after delivering a first half sales and profit performance ahead of its expectations.  The group, whose UK grocery market share has grown to a near decade high of 15.3%, said it now expected to deliver retail underlying operating profit of “more than 1 billion pounds” for its year to March 2026.
