Markets Overview:

The UK 100 is called to open +16 higher at 9669.
The UK 100 is poised to open slightly higher today, after eking out a gain which lagged tech-supported advances elsewhere yesterday.

Stocks jumped to new records Stateside on Monday after U.S. and China officials cooled tensions over the weekend, laying the groundwork for President Donald Trump and China President Xi Jinping to clinch a trade deal this week.  The S&P climbed 1.23% to 6,875.16, its first close ever above the 6,800 level, while the Nasdaq rallied 1.86% to 23,637.46, bolstered by a rise in Nvidia and other chip stocks. The Dow Jones jumped 337.47 points, or 0.71% to 47,544.59. All three of the major averages closed at record highs, along with the Russell 2000 small-cap benchmark.

Most Asian markets closed lower today, with Japan’s Nikkei 225, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng, and South Korea’s KOSPI all declining. In contrast, China’s Shanghai Composite Index gained, briefly hitting a 10-year high. The mixed performance occurred as investors watched for developments from a US-China meeting and ahead of a US Federal Reserve meeting later in the week.

Company News:

Anglo American has reaffirmed its copper output forecast the full year, as well as saying that it’s made good progress on the dual track separation at De Beers.  The miner is currently going through a restructuring, so it’s been looking to divest its stake in the iconic diamond miner.  Overall, Anglo said that strong operational momentum and higher grades at its Quellaveco and Los Bronces mines underpinned performance in its copper business, which offset the lower production phase at Collahuasi.

Barclays has increased its presence in the US consumer banking sector with a deal to buy Best Egg.  The UK lender will pay $800 million for the firm, a direct-to-consumer personal loan origination platform. It expects the deal to close in the second quarter of next year.  It’ll become part of the US consumer bank division at Barclays.

HSBC reported in Hong Kong overnight. The lender raised its profitability outlook for 2025 even as earnings slid following an unexpected $1.1 billion provision tied to Bernard Madoff’s giant fraud case more than a decade ago. The latter was reported yesterday, so won’t have come as a surprise to the market today.  HSBC shares in Hong Kong rose more than 3% after the earnings statement.  Pretax profit for the third-quarter fell 14% to $7.3 billion as litigation expenses blunted rising earnings from its key wealth management business, according to a statement on Tuesday. Revenue beat estimates.  Its Hong Kong business grew pretax profits by 11% driven by higher client activity across its wealth business. But its UK division saw a 5% decline as operating expenses increased. HSBC has been shutting its mergers and acquisition and equity underwriting operations in the US, UK and continental Europe, causing job reductions in those regions.
