Markets Overview:

The UK 100 is called to open +48 Points this morning at 9,474. The UK 100 looks set to open higher this morning, This comes on the back of the weaker than expected inflation print this morning, which may open the door to a potential November interest rate cut by the Bank of England.  Capital Economics points out that CPI inflation is set to fall to 3.5% or below in October, not least due to year-on-year declines in utility and fuel prices.  It said CPI may surprise by falling to 2% by the end of next year, aided by a fall back in food price inflation and the impact of a weaker jobs market on wage growth.  However, the consultancy doubts today’s release will prompt the Bank of England to cut rates from 4% next month.

The Dow Jones had a record-setting session on Tuesday, boosted by strong earnings reports from companies such as Coca-Cola and 3M, while the S&P was relatively unchanged.  The 30-stock index gained 218.16 points, or 0.47%, to close at 46,924.74. It briefly topped 47,000. The broad market S&P closed just above the flatline at 6,735.35. The tech-heavy Nasdaq lagged, falling 0.16% to 22,953.67.

Coca-Cola and 3M supported the Dow’s move after their latest releases surpassed Wall Street’s estimates, jumping 4.1% and 7.7%, respectively. Fellow old economy stock General Motors soared 14.9% after it hiked its guidance for the full year and topped estimates. The Detroit automaker also lowered its estimated impact from President Donald Trump’s tariffs for the year, saying that it expects to offset about 35% of that hit.

Most major Asian stock markets ended trading with mixed results overnight, with the Kospi climbing while the Hang Seng and ASX 200 fell. The Nikkei 225 ended relatively flat.

Company News:

Barclays reported a profit on Wednesday as it announced a surprise £500 million ($667 million) share buyback.  It comes despite pre-tax profit for the third quarter coming in at £2.1 billion, slightly below analysts’ expectations and marking a 7% decline from the same period in 2024.  followed suit with its banking peers with a major hike to its motor finance provisions after the financial watchdog launched its industry redress scheme.  Barclays set aside an extra £235m for the car mis-selling scandal, taking total provisions to £325m.  Barclays operated in the motor finance market under Clydesdale Financial Services from 2003 to 2019.

Fresnillo. reported third quarter production figures in line with expectations, with the company on track to meet its full year guidance.  Gold production is trending toward the upper end of the company’s projected range, while silver production declined as anticipated.  Quarterly attributable silver production totalled 11.7 million ounces (including Silverstream), representing a 6.6% decrease from the second quarter and a 19.1% decline compared to the same period last year. The reduction was primarily due to the cessation of mining activities at San Julián DOB, lower ore grades at multiple sites, and decreased processing volumes.  Gold production reached 151,256 ounces in the third quarter, down 4.1% from the previous quarter and 3.5% lower than the third quarter of 2024. However, year-to-date gold production of 465,096 ounces showed a strong 8.8% increase compared to the same period last year, driven mainly by higher ore grades at Herradura resulting from improved selectivity.
