Markets Overview:

The UK 100 is called to open -19 points this morning at 9,231.  The UK 100 index last night closed 0.3% higher at 9250.43, having been as low as 9177.09 earlier in the session.  A surge for copper-focused stocks including Anglo American drove the turnaround, although London’s top flight is seen slightly lower at today’s opening bell.

Stateside yesterday saw the S&P fall as artificial intelligence giants Nvidia and Oracle came under pressure for a second day.  The broad market index dropped 0.28% to end at 6,637.97, while the Nasdaq pulled back 0.34% to settle at 22,497.86. The Dow Jones declined 171.50 points, or 0.37%, to finish at 46,121.28.  Nvidia slid almost 1%, continuing its declines from Tuesday as heightened fears about the potentially circular nature of the AI industry drew investor scepticism. Earlier this week, the chipmaker announced a $100 billion partnership with OpenAI. Fellow leading AI player Oracle also fell for a second straight day, losing nearly 2% Wednesday.  The Nasdaq’s losses for the day were narrowed heading into the close as Intel surged more than 6% after Bloomberg, citing people familiar with the matter, reported that the chipmaker is seeking an investment from Apple. That comes just days after Nvidia said it would invest $5 billion in the company.

Asia markets are mixed, with the Nikkei 225 up 0.2% and the Hang Seng index near its opening mark.

Company News:

Babcock International says trading in the first five months of its financial year has been “encouraging”, with organic revenue growth and underlying operating margin progress in line with board expectations.  The defence contractor is keeping guidance for the full year unchanged, having upgraded it medium-term outlook in June. Strong growth in its Nuclear division, driven by civil nuclear projects and submarine support contracts, and the Aviation wing, as a result of the ramp-up of the French Mentor 2 pilot training contract, as well as ongoing growth in Marine was partly offset by lower revenue in Land, due to lower activity in the rail business.  The £200 million share buyback announced at results in June is around 25% complete, it added, with the programme set to be wrapped up by the end of the financial year.

Co-op today posted a half-year loss after the retailer revealed a £206 million hit to revenues following this summer’s cyber attack.  The group’s bottom-line loss of £50 million for the six months to 5 July compared with a profit of £58 million a year earlier.  The deficit includes £20 million of one-off costs in relation to the cyber attack, as well as an estimated underlying margin impact of £60 million.
