Markets Overview:

The UK 100 is called to open +6 points this morning at 9,214. The UK 100 looks set to open marginally higher this morning, having steadied after Tuesday’s big fall with a rise of 0.15% in yesterday’s session. The pound is 0.2% lower at $1.3604.

The Dow Jones closed higher and the S&P was little changed after a volatile day of trading as the Federal Reserve lowered its benchmark rate as expected on Wednesday. Fed Chairman Jerome Powell tempered enthusiasm a bit by signalling the move was not the start of a long rate-lowering cycle.  The broad-market index settled down 0.1% at 6,600.35, while the Nasdaq dropped 0.3% to 22,261.33. The Dow finished up 260.42 points, or 0.6%, at 46,018.32, after earlier hitting an all-time high.  Shares of high-flying tech stocks led the losses following the Fed decision as investors took profits on the bull market winners. Nvidia, Oracle, Palantir and Broadcom each closed lower. On the positive side, stocks that would benefit from lower rates were in the green, boosting the Dow and the broader market. Shares of Walmart, JPMorgan and American Express were higher during the session.

In Asia, the Federal Reserve rates decision helped the Nikkei 225 to rise by 1.3%. The Hang Seng index is 0.9% lower.

Focus will now turn to the Bank of England interest rate decision, due at 12pm today, the general consensus is a hold and interest rate to be unchanged.

Company News:

Next today left annual profit guidance unchanged after reporting a 13.8% rise in the half-year surplus to £515 million.  The chain continues to expect full-year sales growth of 7.5% and a pre-tax profit of £1.105 billion, up 9.3% on the previous year.  Today’s figures for the six months to July follow a series of upgrades to City guidance, driven by very strong international growth and continued UK expansion.  The company said: “In spite of the challenges presented by the UK economy, Next is in a good place, with multiple opportunities for growth, both in the UK and overseas”.
