Markets Overview:

The UK 100 is called to open +2 points at 9,189. The UK’s blue chip index looks set to open broadly unchanged on Monday, as investors weigh potential VAT hikes for UK businesses and a ruling across the pond sees US President Donald Trump’s tariffs declared illegal.

Stocks fell Stateside on Friday as investors took some money off the table into a long weekend following a new S&P record and solid Nvidia earnings this week. New inflation data showed rising prices was still a risk heading into the new month. The S&P 500 ended the day 0.64% lower at 6,460.26, but still scored its fourth winning month in a row. The Nasdaq shed 1.15% to finish at 21,455.55, while the Dow Jones lost 92.02 points, or 0.20%, to settle at 45,544.88. Core PCE, a key inflation measure watched by the Federal Reserve which excludes the costs of food and energy, increased by 2.9% in July, in-line with expectations but an acceleration from the prior month and the highest level since February.

In Asia this morning, Chinese ecommerce giant Alibaba boosted the Hang Seng, but other markets mostly fell back after Wall Street retreated from record highs on Friday. Alibaba rocketed 15% following bumper results after hours on Friday, including a surge in AI revenue. The Hang Seng was up 2% and Shanghai edged up but other Asian indexes were in the red, with Japan’s Nikkei off 2% as tech shares came under pressure

US markets are closed today for the Labour Day holiday.

Company News:

Hunting will shut down 80% of its UK operations according to a report in the Sunday Times. The London-based supplier of equipment to the oil and gas industry will close four of its five UK centres including its main Scottish site, Chief Executive Officer Jim Johnson reportedly said.  CEO Johnson said the closures were linked to UK government windfall taxes and net-zero regulations. The energy profits levy, also known as windfall tax on oil and gas companies, has a headline rate of 78%.
