Asian markets were little changed Tuesday after Wall Street treaded water and US President Donald Trump held what he called “very good” talks with Ukrainian and European leaders on ending the three-year war.  Hopes for a breakthrough rose after Trump said he spoke by phone with Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, whom he met in Alaska last week, after hosting the Europeans and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House.

Tokyo, Sydney and Seoul were down slightly, while Hong Kong, Shanghai and Singapore were in the green.

In the US yesterday, the major averages ended Monday near flat after posting a winning week. Traders awaited key retail earnings and Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell’s annual speech at the central bank’s Jackson Hole summit.  The Dow Jones dropped 34.30 points, or 0.08%, to close at 44,911.82. The S& closed down 0.01% and ended at 6,449.15, while the Nasdaq inched up 0.03% to settle at 21,629.77.  Shares of Meta Platforms and Microsoft dropped about 2.3% and 0.6%, weighing on the broader market.

Company News:

BHP today cut its final dividend by 18% to 60 US cents a share after reporting a 26% decline in annual underlying profit to $10.16 billion.  Revenue slipped 8% to $51.3 billion, primarily due to lower iron ore and coal prices in the year to 30 June.  The top-line decline came despite record copper and iron ore production volumes and increased steelmaking coal output.  The dividend represents 60% of underlying profit and brings the total returned to shareholders since January 2020 to $59 billion.  BHP’s Australian-listed shares rose 2% following the publication of the results.
