Markets Overview:

The UK 100 called to open +15 points this morning at 9,110.  The UK 100 looks set for a solid start to the week after US stock markets closed higher before the weekend.

Data out this morning showed the UK Job market has continued to cool, starting salaries at four-year low.  Hiring activity fell further in July amid the impact of economic uncertainty and increased payroll costs.  The monthly KPMG and REC report on jobs showed a “further steep decline” in permanent staff appointment in July.  Growth in starting salaries also slowed to its lowest level for more than four years as firms tightened their recruitment budgets.

Stocks rose Stateside on Friday, led by the tech sector, as the major averages ended the week with solid gains. The Nasdaq jumped 0.98% for a record close of 21,450.02. The tech-heavy index hit a fresh all-time intraday high earlier in the day. The S&P added 0.78% and ended at 6,389.45, a hair’s breadth shy of a record close. The Dow Jones climbed 206.97 points, or 0.47%, closing at 44,175.61.

In Asia this morning, the Shanghai Composite is 0.4% higher after China’s inflation figure for July showed no change from a month earlier. Economists had seen a 0.1% decline.  The Hang Seng index is broadly unchanged while the Tokyo stock market is closed for a holiday. Brent Crude starts the week at $66.28 a barrel and the pound at $1.3467.
