The UK 100 called to open +17 points this morning at 9,117. The UK 100 is set for a steady session after yesterday’s underperformance, when London’s top flight closed 0.7% or 63.54 points lower at 9,100.77.
Stateside yesterday saw The Dow Jones give back gains and closed lower on Thursday as investors pocketed some of their profits in what’s been a solid week thus far. The Dow fell 224.48 points, or 0.51%, closing at 43,968.64.The S&P lost 0.08% and ended at 6,340.00. The Nasdaq advanced 0.35%, ending at 21,242.70. The major averages saw sharp swings during the session, with the Dow up more than 300 points at its high and off more than 390 points at its low.
In Asia, Japanese stocks rallied Friday on a mixed day for Asian markets, fuelled by relief that Tokyo and Washington had settled a tariff issue that raised concerns about their trade deal. The news compounded optimism sparked by strong earnings from market heavyweights Sony and Softbank that fanned a rally in the tech sector.
Flutter reported second-quarter earnings that beat Wall Street expectations Thursday. The company reported adjusted earnings of $2.95 per share versus an estimated $2.08, according to a survey of analysts by LSEG. Revenue came in slightly higher than expectations at $4.19 billion against consensus expectations of $4.13 billion. Its U.S. revenue for the quarter of $1.79 billion came in slightly higher than expectations, and adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization, or EBITDA, was nearly $100 million higher than analyst consensus. Flutter also raised its full-year guidance, citing the effect of U.S. sports results and tax changes, among other things.
GSK has announced a settlement with CureVac and BioNTech regarding mRNA patent litigation, resulting in a $370 million upfront payment and a 1% royalty on future US sales of mRNA vaccines by Pfizer and BioNTech. This settlement, which will be recorded in GSK’s financial results, does not affect GSK’s ongoing patent enforcement against Pfizer and BioNTech in the US and Europe, and includes a tender agreement for GSK’s CureVac shares.
Hammerson has completed the acquisition of the remaining 50% stake in Bullring and Grand Central, making it the sole owner of these major retail assets. This strategic move is expected to strengthen Hammerson’s position in the retail property market, potentially enhancing its operational capabilities and offering greater value to stakeholders.
