The UK 100 called to open +54 points this morning at 8,780. The UK 100 looks set to rebound this morning. On Wednesday night, the U.S. Court of International Trade ruled that Trump overstepped his authority when he imposed his “reciprocal” tariffs. The judges ordered that the challenged tariff orders be vacated.
Futures surged early Thursday as a federal court knocked down President Donald Trump’s “reciprocal” tariffs. Solid earnings from artificial intelligence heavyweight Nvidia also buoyed the market. Futures tied to the S&P rose 1.66%, while Nasdaq futures gained 2%. Dow futures climbed 600 points, or 1.42%.
Stocks are coming off of a lacklustre session Wednesday. The S&P ended the day almost 0.6% lower, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq lost 0.5%. The Dow fell nearly 245 points, or 0.6%.
Markets in Asia overnight were also strongly higher, Japan and South Korean markets, both major exporters who faced huge tariffs – surged more than one per cent thanks to rallies in tech firms and auto makers. Seoul was also helped by a central bank interest rate cut. Hong Kong, Shanghai, Sydney, Taipei and Manila were also higher.
Auto Trader Group on Thursday reported a 12% rise in basic earnings per share to 31.66 pence for the year ended March 31, as operating profit rose 8% to £376.8 million. The company returned £275.7 million to shareholders through buybacks and dividends during the year. Group revenue increased 5% to £601.1 million. The core Auto Trader platform generated £564.8 million, up 7%, while leasing unit Autorama contributed £36.3 million, down from £41.2 million. Auto Trader’s operating profit rose to £394 million, with an operating margin of 70%. Group margin stood at 63%. Adjusted EBITDA rose 5% to £393.9 million. Cash generated from operations increased to £399.7 million, up from £379 million. At year-end, the group had net cash of £15.3 million and no draw on its £200 million credit facility. Retailer revenue increased 7% to £480 million, driven by a 2% rise in average forecourts to 14,013 and a 5% rise in average revenue per retailer to £2,834. The price lever added £78 and product added £77 to ARPR, while stock reduced it by £22 due to fewer average listings and faster sales. Consumer Services revenue rose to £42.4 million from £39.6 million. Private revenue was flat at £26.6 million. Motoring services revenue grew 22% to £15.8 million. Revenue from Manufacturer and Agency customers fell 8% to £13.5 million. Operating costs for Auto Trader rose 13% to £174.4 million. People costs increased 14% to £92.8 million due to headcount growth and higher wages. Share-based payments rose to £11.6 million following awards in November 2023 and 2024. The company proposed a final dividend of 7.1 pence per share, taking the full-year dividend to 10.6 pence, up from 9.6 pence. It repurchased 23.9 million shares during the year for £186.4 million.
