Markets Overview:

The UK 100 called to open +1 points this morning at 8,740.  The UK 100 is called to open marginally higher this morning, having fallen back yesterday.  Retail sales volumes rose by a bigger-than-expected 1.2% in April, the Office for National Statistics said today.  The fourth monthly increase in a row benefited from fine weather after food stores reported strong trading.  The figure, which compares with City forecasts for growth of about 0.3%, follows a rise of 0.1% in March.  The ONS said sales volumes rose by 1.8% in the three months to April, when compared with the three months to January.

The S&P 500 ended Thursday near flat, as investors grappled with fears of rising rates and worries about a ballooning U.S. deficit. The 30-year Treasury yield hit its highest since October 2023 as lawmakers passed a bill that investors fear could worsen the U.S. deficit.  The Dow Jones slipped 1.35 points, closing at 41,859.09. The S&P lost 0.04% and ended at 5,842.01, while the nasdaq advanced 0.28% and settled at 18,925.73.

Asian stocks rose early Friday as U.S. Treasury yields eased after a rocky week due to worries in the bonover mounting U.S. government debt.  The yield of the 10-year Treasury shed 0.6% to 4.52% while the two-year yield, which more closely tracks expectations for action by the Federal Reserve, slipped 0.4% to 3.98%.  In share trading, Tokyo’s Nikkei 225 gained 0.8% to 37,289.60 after the government reported a core inflation rate of 3.5% in April, the highest since early 2023.  The surge in prices has increased the likelihood that the Bank of Japan might raise its benchmark interest rate at its next policy meeting, analysts said.  Hong Kong’s Hang Seng picked up 0.4% to 23,627.99 while the Shanghai Composite Index added 1% to 3,382.12.  Seoul’s Kospi climbed 0.2% to 2,597.49 and the S&P/ASX 200 in Australia gained 0.4% to 8,379.10.
