Markets Overview:

The UK 100 called to open -153 points this morning at 8,455.  The UK 100 looks set for a sharp fall at the open this morning, markets had rallied into yesterdays close, however Donald Trump’s global tariff announcements last night, after the close in the US sent US futures sharply lower.

Stock markets across Asia fell on Thursday, raising concerns about a potential global trade war and severe economic fallout.  Tokyo’s Nikkei 225 dropped as much as 4% in early trade before partially recovering to close 2.9% lower at 34,675.97 on Thursday. South Korea’s Kospi slipped 1.5%, while Hong Kong’s Hang Seng fell 1.4%.  The Shanghai Composite dipped slightly by less than 0.1% and Australia’s ASX 200 was down 1.3%.  Chinese imports will be hit with a 34%, on top of the 20 per cent he previously imposed, bringing the total new levy to an eye-watering 54%. Vietnam and Cambodia were hit with the highest tariffs at 46 per cent and 49% respectively.

Prior to yesterday’s trade announcements, the S&P advanced 0.67% to close at 5,670.97, while the Nasdaq added 0.87% and ended at 17,601.05. The 30-stock Dow Jones added 235.36 points, or 0.56%, and settled at 42,225.32. Earlier in the session, the broad market S&P 500 was more than 1% lower.  Stock Futures tied to the Dow Jones lost 828 points, or 1.95%. S&P future dropped 2.68% while Nasdaq lost 3.19%.  Shares of multinational companies tumbled in extended trading. Nike and Apple each dropped about 7%. Shares of big sellers of imported goods were among the hardest hit. Five Below lost 14%, Dollar Tree tumbled 11% and Gap plunged 8.5%. Tech shares dropped in an overall risk-off mood, with Nvidia off 5% and Tesla down 7%.

Currys has up the dial on its profit guidance for the soon-to-finish financial year.  The electrical goods retailer said trading has been “robust” since January, echoing a similar post-Christmas statement at that time.
