Index Focus - 21 October 2016

Equities mixed this morning with event-risk fatigue (US election debate, ECB, China GDP) looking set to mean a quiet end to the week. UK’s UK 100 only outperforming thanks to M&A in Tobacco, otherwise it’s a mix of both defensives and high beta book-ending the index in terms of drivers. Certain Miners are posting gains in spite of USD strength (EUR weakness helping DAX) hampering metals, perhaps thanks to oil regaining its footing after yesterday’s sharp declines. Plenty of interest in the many major corporates scheduled to report next week.

The UK Index 100 is holding its 5-week uptrend, well above 7000, itching for a test of 7050 resistance. The DAX 30 sits just above 10700 after yesterday’s breakout. Platform for next up-leg? Dow Jones Futures are back around 4-day lows of 18115, deciding whether to break lower or rebound. Gold has found support at Tuesday’s $1260 breakout level, which could help keep its October rebound alive.
