Index Focus – 18 Aug - 18 August 2014

Global markets have started the week on a high after news that talks between Russia and Ukraine over a truce will begin with Germany and France acting as mediators. Markets experienced a sharp decline on Friday afternoon was caused by reports that the Ukrainians had attacked a Russian military convoy. Markets looked likely to finish the week positive on for this news to cause a sharp fall and finishing the week positive.

UK’s UK 100  is looking to regain the highs that was seen on Friday before reports of a Ukrainian attack on a Russian convoy sent the UK 100 spiraling downwards. A break of Friday’s high of 6745 could give hope to a push towards 6800, with support to the downside seen at the rising short term trend line at around 6682.

Germany’s DAX much like the UK 100 is looking to regain the losses incurred on Friday afternoon. Resistance could be seen again today at Friday’s high of 9326, with a break of this level giving potential to a rise up towards the 9400’s and then on to 9500’s. Support on the downside maybe seen at the short term rising trend line around 9080.

The US Dow Jones like its European peers is eating back into Friday’s losses with potential resistance at 16780. However, a break above this level could see an attempt to retake 16900 and then on to 17000 again. Macro data is thin today so all eyes with surely be on the developments of global tensions to determine the next move.
