Index Focus – 15 Aug - 15 August 2014

Global markets look set to finish the week on a high after weaker than expected economic data heightened hopes that an interest rate rise will not be rushed. The Euro-zone data released yesterday showed that no growth had been made in the second quarter. Comments from Russian President Vladimir Putin signaled that tension could begin to ease in the Ukraine which also sent the markets higher. However, tensions in other parts of the world are still dominating headlines, with developments having market moving potential. UK GDP data due for release at 09:30 this morning will be closely monitored to see if the UK has bucked the Euro-zone trend and grown in the second quarter.

UK’s UK 100  is continuing to eat back into the losses seen over the last couple of weeks, with the uptrend from last weeks lows still continuing. The UK 100 is trading around last weeks resistance levels of 6720. A break up through this level could pave the way for a rise towards 6830. However the RSI for the UK 100 has moved into overbought territory, with potential for traders to reduce risk over the weekend.

Germany’s DAX is also continuing its climb from last weeks lows of 8900. The DAX has failed again this morning to break above yesterdays resistance level of 9267 which it hit briefly this morning. A break up through this level could give rise to a push towards 9600, however, investors may prefer to take some risk off the table for the weekend which could halt any push forward today.

The US Dow Jones like its European peers is still making headway in regaining some of the losses seen over the last couple of weeks. The futures look set for a positive open, however a raft of data due for release this afternoon could determine the direction on the DOW heading into the weekend.
