Markets Overview: (Source: Bloomberg, FT, Reuters, DJ Newswires)

UK 100 called higher by 13 points at 6532 with the focal point still on Crimea, following the referendum over the weekend this whereby voters overwhelmingly backed breaking away from Ukraine to join Russia. With Friday’s trading session showing big swings, whereby the German Dax went from triple digits losses to finish in the blue by over 30 points, when details emerged that Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov said Russia had no plans to invade, it will be closely watched to see the next move.

Asian markets were mixed with the Nikkei and Hang Seng both slightly lower as investors were nervously waiting how the European markets would react to the referendum. Chinese shares bucked the trend and increased as the Yuan dropped after the government widened the currency’s trading band. Alibaba announced more details of what would be the biggest IPO offering since Facebook in 2012.

US markets echoed European peers on what was a quiet afternoon whereby stocks finished all slightly in the red with the Ukraine situation keeping investors away. The Dow jones finished down by 40 point ti finish at 16,065 with the S&P500 down 5 points to finish at 1,841.

Commodities: Gold hits $1,392.60 oz, the highest level since Sept 9th, as the Crimean vote leads to safe haven demand and US European sanctions discussions. Copper nears 2010 low at $6,466.75 tn, as China widens trading band on the Yuan to 2% either side of the governments reference rate. WTI crude rose 50 cents to $99.39 a barrel, whilst Brent advanced 7 cents to $108.28 a barrel on the back of the Crimean vote.

In focus today: EU CPI @ 10:00, US Industrial production, Manufacturing production, Capacity utilisation @ 13:15, NAHB Housing Market Index @14:00, ECBs Weidman speaking @ 15:00.
