Markets Overview:

UK 100 is called to open +3 points this morning at 6967.  A modestly higher open is expected this morning, this comes after stocks in Asia overnight were mostly lower on Tuesday as investors await cues from the U.S. Federal Reserve’s two-day meeting, which begins today, and more earnings.  The Hang Seng index in Hong Kong rose 0.14% while the Shanghai Composite in China slipped 0.41%.  In Japan, the Nikkei 225 fell 0.28% and South Korea’s Kospi dipped 0.37%.  It was a broadly positive session in the US yesterday, with the S&P 500 edging higher to close at another record on Monday, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite climbed 0.9% to hit its first fresh record close since Feb. 12.  The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed lower by 0.18% to be the sole underperformer.

HSBC reported a significantly better-than-expected 79% rise in Q1 profit after the improved economic outlook allowed them to release cash it had set aside against bad loans because of the coronavirus pandemic. They posted a profit before tax of $5.78bn for Q1 (2020: $3.21bn) which was above average analyst forecast of $3.35bn. They released $400m of earlier provisions that they had previously set aside for bad debt due to the coronavirus pandemic.
