UK 100 called to open -15 points this morning at 6725. Calls for a flat to negative open come amid concerns about new Covid variants tempered the positivity over Joe Biden’s pledge for a near $2 billion economic stimulus plan. In Asia main markets pared their earlier losses after the People’s Republic said its economy had expanded by a better-than-expected 6.5% in the fourth quarter. In 2020, China grew by 2.3% in 2020, a remarkable and resilient performance given the global impact of the pandemic. US markets are closed today for Martin Luther King Day.
AstraZeneca: Brazilian health regulator Anvisa has approved the emergency use of COVID-19 vaccines from Sinovac Biotech and AstraZeneca, clearing the way for immunizations in the country.
BT is facing a claim for £600m lodged by a consumer campaign group, which says that the company failed to compensate fixed-line customers, many of them elderly, for overcharging.
