Markets Overview:

 

UK 100 is called to open +20 points this morning at 6776.  A positive open is expected this morning to continue yesterdays rally as investor sentiment continues to point north as vaccine roll outs continue at a faster than expected pace, this pared with the return of Wall Street today after the long weekend.  In Asia stocks were mainly higher on Tuesday as markets in mainland China remain closed for the Lunar New Year holiday.  The Hang Seng index in Hong Kong surged 1.77%.  In Japan, the Nikkei 225 jumped 1.28%, closing above 30,000 for the first time since 1990 and continuing to make gains as the Bank of Japan said it is not stopping its ongoing quantitative easing programme.

Company News:

BHP Group have hiked its interim dividend, as profit and revenue rose on higher metal prices and strong output at several of the group’s assets. Their pretax profit rose 13% to $8.83bn on revenue that grew 15% YoY to $25.64bn. Profits from operations increased 17% to $9.75bn and they raised their interim dividend by 55% to 101 US cents per share.

 

Dunelm deputy chair William Adderley sells 15m shares (7.4% stake) in the company at 1,280p each.

 

Glencore have reinstated its dividend after their net debt fell by 10% in its FY 2020 results, helped by surging commodity prices in H2. They are recommending a distribution on $0.12 cents per share. Their revenues were down 34% and their net loss widened to $1.9bn.

 

Playtech has signed a strategic agreement in the US with Greenwood racing.

 

Safestore reports that their Q1 revenue has risen 11% YoY to £44.4m.

 

Serco agrees to buy Whitney, Bradley & Brown for $295m from HIG Capital.
