Tesco Slumps; Continues to Disappoint, Says Accendo — Market Talk

Dow Jones – 23 Oct 2014

Shares in supermarket giant Tesco’s (TSCO.LN) slump over 6% in early trade after the company recorded a record 92% decline in pre-tax profits in the first half of the year. “Blackrock has publicly been dumping the stock, Warren Buffett announced his investment was a ‘huge mistake’ and a further GBP13M on top of the GBP250m accounting black hole sees the shares back around multi-year lows,” says James Abbott at Accendo Markets. “Why would anyone take a risk on a company that continues to disappoint in this manner?

Weak U.S. Close, Oil Price Slump to Drag on London Shares

Dow Jones – 23 Oct 2014

“Mike van Dulken, Head of Research at Accendo Markets, commented to clients: “The UK 100 Index called to open 40 points lower at 6355, back around Tuesday’s breakout level, which remains supportive following another test of 6400 amid the reversal from 6100…The weak open call stems from a negative U.S. close and Asian session after much higher than expected U.S. crude inventories led to another slump in oil prices (27-month low), dragging equities lower on profit taking from the recent rebound and overnight China Manufacturing data delivering mixed messages.”

British American Tobacco Slumps; Drags UK Index Down — Market Talk

Dow Jones – 22 Oct 2014

British American Tobacco (BATS.LN) drops 4.5% to 3310.5p after reporting a big fall in nine-month revenue. Investors are fuming at “the extent of currency devaluation on revenues and a challenging trading environment blamed on weak emerging markets, Europe’s struggling economic recovery and continued pressure on disposable incomes,” says Mike van Dulken, Head of Research at Accendo Markets. Also notes this share price fall has hit the UK 100 to the tune of nine points, meaning the U.K. benchmark index is underperforming the core European markets, now down 22 points or 0.4%.
