Shares of building materials company CRH pop 2.7% higher to 1683p, topping the UK 100 , following news it is in discussions to buy assets from Lafarge and Holcim ahead of the two cement companies’ proposed $43 billion merger. Mike van Dulken at Accendo markets says this transaction would be significant, bolstering CRH’s presence thanks to overlapping businesses allowing for simple integration with existing operations. Adds that “the risk of course is that it overpays.” Shares trade at June 2014 highs.

Sports Direct Shares Sink on Stake Sale by Founder — Market Talk

Shares of Sports Direct International  (SPD.LN) sink 4.4% to 727p, the second largest faller in the UK 100 , after its founder Mike Ashley agrees to sell a part of his stake to rescue Scottish football club Rangers via a emergency loan. The sporting goods retailer has confirmed that Mike Ashley has sold GBP110.9M worth of shares. “What he does with the rest of the money remains to be seen,” says Mike van Dulken of Accendo Markets, “but it could see him dabbling with more derivatives …. and take/increase interests in recovering retail operations.”
